I took these photos last fall for the DVD release of the Cobra Tour’s last gig at the Lutakko club. The bands are Sotajumala, Deathchain and Survivors Zero.

Here are three photos of what I believe to be the second time I photographed PMMP. These are taken at 10th of December, 2006, at the Lutakko club in Jyväskylä, Finland. I had photographed my first concert ever about nine months before this gig, and I think these are some of the earliest concert photos that I still like.

This was the first concert photo of mine that was published on Keskisuomalainen, a Finnish Newspaper (as it happens, my first photo overall published in the paper featured a Finnish male stripper group called ‘Scandinavian Hunks’ the previous day). A black-and-white version of this photo was also published in the gatefold of the band’s vinyl version of ‘Kovemmat kädet’.

I think this was taken after Mira, the rest of the band, and the audience sang ‘Happy birthday’ to Paula who turned 25 that night.

This is one of my favorites, and still in my web portfolio. I think this was the starting point for a recurring theme in my concert photos: the study of band-audience interaction.

By the way, I have the good people of Lutakko to thank for enabling me to take these and countless other photos. I became a house photographer there at the fall of ‘06, which meant I could photograph full gigs of any band (as long as the band didn’t object). They’ve never explicitly asked for anything in exchange.

This is the only published shot taken with my Hasselblad 500C, a medium format film camera manufactured in 1961. I would love to phtograph more concerts with the camera, but it’s often very hard to focus in the dim light, and I have to get the film processed and scan it before the deadline.

This photo was published in Rumba magazine about a year ago.

A two-day indoor festival held last weekend at the Lutakko Club, done for Rumba magazine and Keskisuomalainen (newspaper).

The shutter drags(*) were mostly what was needed to make interesting photos. I usually avoid using flash, but this time the lights were so badly placed – and bad quality overall – on the two smaller stages, that I actually had to go home to get my flash in the middle of the festival’s first day.

(*): ‘Shutter dragging’ refers to a technique where the photographer freezes the essential parts of the image (typically a performer) with a flash, but keeps the camera’s shutter speed so low that the ambient light creates patterns as the camera moves during the exposure). The ‘Jaakko & Jay’ and ‘Steel Mammoth’ pics are shutter dragged.
